Milk thistle, also known as Silybum marianum, is an herb that belongs to the Asteraceae family (Compositae). It was originally born in southern Europe and North Africa and other places, for thousands of years of history of folk medicinal plants. Its seeds are commonly used for its liver-protective properties and contain a group of active compounds called silymarin (a mixture of flavonolignans, including silybin, silydianin, and silychristin).
