Bee propolis is a resinous mixture that honey bees collect from tree buds, sap flows, or other botanical sources. It is used as sealant for unwanted open spaces in the hive. Propolis is used for small gaps (approximately 6 millimeters (0.24 in) or less), while larger spaces are usually filled with beeswax. Its color varies depending on its botanical source, the most common being dark brown.
The basic components of natural propolis include: resin complex 39% — 53%, polyphenols 12% — 17%, polysaccharides 2% — 3%, beeswax 19% — 35%, impurities (including pollen, etc.) 8% — 12%. Bee propolis contains rich active substances, such as total flavonoids, total phenolic acids, terpenes, which offer antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, antioxidant, immune enhancement, hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering, anti-tumor and other functions.
Benefits of Bee Propolis Extract
- Immune enhancement
Propolis has a wide range of effects on the body’s immune system, both enhancing humoral immune function and promoting cellular immune function. Propolis can not only promote the body to increase antibody production, but also enhance the phagocytosis of macrophages and the activity of natural killer cells, and improve the body’s specific and non-specific immune function. Therefore, propolis is called a natural immune function booster. - Antioxidation
Propolis is recognized as a natural antioxidant. It is rich in antioxidant flavonoids, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, vitamin C and trace elements such as zinc and selenium, so it has a significant antioxidant effect. It was proved that propolis had strong antioxidant capacity and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was significantly increased at the concentration of 0.01% — 0.05%. - Antibacterial effect
- Antiviral effect
- Anti-cancer effect
- Hypolipidemic effect
